Decisions

Uncategorized

QuestionMarksSml

Decisions, decisions. I seem to have found myself making an awful lot of decisions lately; some have been quick & easy, others have taken an awful lot of time and energy. Some have been personal decisions, some have been work decisions. Some have been tricky because there are too many options, some have been tricky because there have been no (obvious) options.
So, it got me thinking, what makes a good decision and after a bit of fuzzy-head time (as I often find when there’s too much to think about and not enough kid-free time to process it all!) my coaching brain kicked in & things became clear ….

The key to making a good decision is the knowing why you are making the decision and then making sure that ‘why’ aligns your (business) vision and values. The easiest way to do this is to write your decision and add a ‘because’ to the end of it. eg “I have decided ….  because…” and your because should line up with your vision & values. If your ‘because’ doesn’t totally line up then try adjusting your decision (eg add time / financial boundaries or outcome conditions) such that it does…. And if that doesn’t work then ask yourself a few of these questions.

“If I have all the money in the world what would I do?”

“If I didn’t care about the consequences what would I do?”

“If I have unlimited time what would I do? And (my favourite) what will I regret not doing?”

Hope that helps… and for those of you reading this thinking “But I don’t have a vision? Why do I need a vision? I’m just me/ my small business”… I encourage you to try creating and writing your own vision down, after all
“if you don’t know where you’re going you’re never going to get there”

Happy decision making … I’m off to review and rewrite my own visions for next time :)

Favourite things…

Uncategorized

It’s half term this week and so today I had a precious 90 minutes alone with my eldest son whilst (his younger brother was at nursery and) we waited for his holiday club to start. It was wonderful. Absolutely brilliant… we made, we played and we laughed. I could have got on with some work, cooking, cleaning or tidying but instead I took the time to enjoy some precious moments with one of my most favorite people … and it was fabulous.

Who are your favourite people? What are your favourite things? Go on, indulge yourself and spend some time with your favourites…. you won’t regret it.

Perspective

Uncategorized

Perspective, perspective, perspective. So what am I on about? Well just recently I’ve been hit by a number of sad tales, tragic experiences that have happened to friends which you wouldn’t wish on anyone, let alone good friends.

And the thing about tragic tales, especially if it’s someone that you know or can easily relate to, is that it pulls everything into  sharp focus very, very quickly. Suddenly all the noise seems disappear, the things that are most important to you stare you in the face …and so very quickly your whole world of worries, ‘jobs’ and responsibilities is pulled into ‘perspective’.

And if we are to take any lessons from these tragedies, it’s these perspectives that we need to hold onto once the shock disappears…. but I don’t want you to have to wait for some tragedies to happen, instead I want to encourage you to think about what is really important to you. I’ve written about priorities before and this is exactly the same… and you can do it in  2 minutes, promise.

  • Take a pen and paper (or some electronic equivalent if need be!) and spend 30 seconds (yep that’s all) thinking about your world…, not just what you’re doing now, but you’re whole world; where you live, what you want to do this year, what you did last year, where you grew up, who you admire, who makes you laugh, where you love to be etc … (you may want to set a timer so you don’t get too lost in dreams)
  • And then once you’ve finished your daydreaming (or the timer has gone off!) I want you to write down the 6-8 words which stick in your head from your daydream
  • Now order those words in order of importance to you … and ‘voila’ you have your 2 minute ‘priorities’
  • Put this list somewhere you’re going to see it lots (fridge, phone, diary) and see how it helps keep your perspective.

Good luck!

What do YOU want this year?

Uncategorized

Everywhere I look at the moment there’s people talking about loosing weight, saving money, getting fitter, giving up smoking… and I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, after all it is that resolution time of the year.

I’ve found myself questioning whether I should loose a little weight too and perhaps I’m spending too much .. and whilst the answers to both of those is definitely a ‘yes!’, they’re not really my resolutions or goals, they’re someone else’s that I’ve just picked up on because they seem like a good idea and I think I ‘should’.

So what are my goals for this year? Well, what are yours? If I’m honest I’ve not yet set about creating my goal plan this year, that’s something I tend to do at the end of January when the kids are firmly back at school & nursery I’ve ‘caught up’ with everything that didn’t happen in the build up to Christmas! But when I do, I sit down and give them a good think. They need to be my ideas, they need to be real and I have to really want them otherwise there’s no point because I just won’t achieve them.

So what about you? Have you decided on your goals for this year… what are they? Have you written them down? Or are you still waiting for that ‘quiet time’  like me? Either way, make sure you block out some time in your diary to focus on them and make sure they’re YOUR ideas, not the rest of the country’s.

Happy New Year! Tanya

Be kind… to yourself

Uncategorized

Everyone seems to be talking about kindness lately; in newspapers, in magazines, on the street, on the radio….  and I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, it is after all that ‘kindness’ time of year.

However, I wonder when the last time was that you were truly kind to yourself? I confess I’m not that great at being kind to myself on a regular basis but when I do make the effort I notice the difference and so I’m going to try and do it more, want to join me?

The first thing we need to do is to work out what ‘kind’ to ourselves really means, and we’ll each be different. Is it treating yourself to your favourite book? Or maybe deferring some tasks so you can curl up on the sofa with your favourite person? What about a long hot bath or taking the time to cook up your favourite meal? Or might just be simply about accepting that you’re trying your best and if you haven’t got things done, you haven’t got things done. Whatever it is, work out how you’re going to be kind to yourself today (or tomorrow if it’s too late by the time you read this!) and do it!

Good luck.. and go on, make sure you do it,  I know you’ll enjoy it!

What’s your motivation?

Uncategorized

So you want to get something done but somehow you’re struggling. You’re not alone.

I see this a lot, both at home and in my work… and however different the situations and the people are, it all comes down to the same thing, motivation … and the big thing that drives the motivation, the ‘why?’

You see, without a really good reason to do something it’s really really difficult to do it, it’s just the way we work. So how do you find a really good reason to do something? Well you need to link the reason to things that are really important to you, your priorities and once you do that then you’ll find the task becomes so much easier.

So go on, write down what it is you want to do (or say it out loud if you don’t have a pen & paper to hand) then write down the ‘why’ next to it, making sure you include one of your priorities in it. If you can’t get a priority into the ‘why’  or the ‘why’ bit just doesn’t seem to be working then I suggest you really think about what it is you’re trying to do and whether it’s worth your energy to continue trying to do it ….  nine times out of ten, if the ‘why’ doesn’t include a priority then the task just isn’t going to happen and your energy is worth saving!

Your place of inspiration

Uncategorized

So where is it… where is the place that your head feels clear, your shoulders feel lighter and your whole world comes into sharp focus? It might be the hills where the wind races past your ears or perhaps beside the sea where sound of the water fills the air. Maybe it’s the wood round the corner from your childhood home or perhaps your own back garden.

Wherever it is, put a date in the diary to get back there soon.. it’s good for your mind and it’s good for you soul and you never know what you might find there. Enjoy!

The Paralympics…

Uncategorized

… are here! It’s time to support our country, celebrate all that the athletes have achieved (just to get to the games) and cheer them on to achieve more goals (or golds) during the games.

Can I also suggest that we all turn around and take a look at ourselves…  Who are you supporting achieve their goals at the moment (other than the Paralympians)?  What have you achieved that you deserve to celebrate? And what is it that you are setting out to achieve now?

Go on… jot down those three answers now … then go and show  your support (with a phone call, text or hug), celebrate your achievements (with an outing, activity or chocolate!) and do one thing to get you on the road to achieve your current goal.

Let me know how you go and enjoy the Paralympics. GO TEAM GB!

Goals Goals Goals

Uncategorized

… what are yours right now? Write them down, even if it’s just one, write it down.

Now look at what you’ve written and, if there’s more than one take each one in turn, transport yourself forward to the time when you’ve achieved your goal… What will you do? What won’t you do? How will you celebrate? How will you feel? What will those closest to you think / do / say?

Then leave the future and come back to today… how much do you really want those goals? Give yourself a score out of 10… if it’s less than 8 then either cross it off or reword it so it’s a 9 or 10.

Now take each goal left on your list (which has scored 8 or more) and work out what you’re going to do before bedtime tomorrow to start making it real. … go on… remember what it will be like once you’ve done it and make a commitment to yourself to make it real…. and soon enough it will be.

Let me know how you go. Good luck!
